In the shadow of Giza's pyramids, Cairo has become the cultural capital of the Arabic civilization. The Suez Canal is the kingpin in Egypt's international trade as it constitutes a startling transition between the timeless temples and pyramids of the ancient world and the modern resorts mushrooming along the Red Sea coast.
The Sinai Peninsula is a remote, dramatically beautiful desert mountain range that is parted from the deep-blue sea by a flat desert strip.
